Many travelers think they have remembered every detail for their international trip. Then they realize that they have forgotten to obtain or renew their most important document, their passport. Fortunately, passport expediting options are available so that travelers can have their documents in time for international travel. Travelers can choose to expedite on their own or to work with an expediting agency.
Time Applicants
People applying for the first time should apply in-person. Applicants must fill out Form DS-11 but should avoid signing the document until they are with their Acceptance Agent. Important information to bring to the agency includes proof of citizenship and appropriate ID, which may be a driver’s license or an ID issued by the government. Additionally, applicants must prepare photocopies of their identification, pay the processing fee and make sure to provide a photo.
Minors
The State Department has separate procedures for minors under 16. Like adults, minors complete Form DS-11 and provide proof that they are U. S. Citizens. Also, minors present proof that they are related to parents such as a birth certificate that has both parents’ names. Then, parents submit identification and photocopies before paying the appropriate fee and providing a passport photo for the minor.
Delivery Methods
Applicants may renew either in-person or by mail. The renewal process begins with providing an undamaged U. S. Passport and Form DS-82. The State Department suggests that applicants place documents in a large envelope and choose a delivery method that can be confirmed. If the original documents become damaged, then travelers will have to get their renewal in-person.
Time Restraints
Expedited passport applicants who are obtaining documents for the first time should go to their regional agency. Also, if applicants have less than two weeks before their travel date or less than four weeks to get a visa, then they should set an appointment at the regional agency. The agency will do its best to supply needed documents for the trip provided that applicants bring all required documentation to their appointment.
Help Through The Mail
Mail-in applications can also be expedited. The State Department recommends that applicants pay for two-way overnight delivery to ensure quick processing. The outside of the envelope must be marked “Expedite.” The State Department website provides information about current processing times for expedited passports via mail but if these times will not get the renewal to the applicant in time for the trip, the applicant should make an in-person appointment.
Agencies Can Help
Many people find the process of rushing documents on their own to be complicated and time-consuming. Many people decide to employ expediting agencies to process their documents quickly. Applicants will find many online listings for these agencies, but they should take the precaution of calling the agency’s number to guarantee its authenticity. Travelers should never send money or documents to an agency if the telephone number is not functional.
Travelers who forget to obtain or renew their documents may think that no options are available. Fortunately, the State Department has created a system that will allow travelers to depart for their destination on time. For maximum convenience, travelers may work with a pass port expediting agency which will help with everything from adding American pasport pages to getting a passport quickly.
