They are big, they are social and they were totally eliminated from Pennsylvania by 1867. The Rocky Mountain elk were reintroduced from 1913 through 1926 and there are now more than 500 living in the area.
You can enjoy seeing them in their natural habitat along many roadways in the Wilds region of Pennsylvania. As with most wild animals the best time to see them is at dawn and dusk.
The cows live just north of Benezette and can weigh as much as 500 pounds. The bulls live closer to Saint Marys and can get as large as 800 pounds. Come and enjoy seeing them, but remember, they are wild animals that you should leave alone. You are not allowed to feed them, it is against the law.
