Welcome to the world of historical Virginia tourism and the Greek Revival architectural building known as the Lyceum. In this building you will be able to feel like you have stepped back in time to the days of the grandeur of a great lecture room, spend some time doing quiet reading or explore the world of science watching the experiments going on during the year 1839.
Jumping ahead a few years you can hear the cries of the soldiers housed here when the building was used as a hospital for the Union soldiers injured in battles. Listen to the cries, mourn those that died and imagine the sadness that surrounded the families that lost loved ones in this deadly war.
See the building as it is converted into a beautiful home and protects the family from 1868 until 1938 when the last family member passed away. The building then became an office for a number of years before falling into such disrepair that it was nearly torn down.
Arrive the heroes of the time when the preservationists convinced the city to buy the building and restore it to its original beauty and use, providing a place for the citizens of the community to come together for programs and reading. Let’s hope the future continues to provide a wonderful place of history for the area.
